Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) · English & literacy
Reading fiction
At Key Stage 3 pupils build comprehension and inference skills when reading fiction, exploring character, setting and plot development, narrative perspective and theme, and analysing language choices such as imagery, tone and dialogue. They compare texts, track changes across a narrative and reference textual evidence to support interpretations, using subject terminology like motif, protagonist and unreliable narrator.
