Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) · English & literacy
Narrative and descriptive writing
Pupils develop narrative and descriptive writing skills by planning and structuring narratives, creating convincing character, atmosphere and setting, using varied sentence structures, precise vocabulary, figurative language and effective dialogue, and showing rather than telling. They practise drafting, editing for cohesion, viewpoint and narrative voice, and using punctuation for clarity and effect.
