Pupils learn common phonically regular patterns, practise high‑frequency and common exception words, and apply segmenting and blending skills to spell simple words; key terms include phonemes, graphemes, suffixes and common prefixes. They also develop strategies for proof‑reading and learning spellings through patterns and mnemonics.
