Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) · Design & technology
Materials and their properties
Pupils explore a range of materials and their properties, including woods, metals, plastics, textiles and composites, learning about hardness, toughness, conductivity, malleability and corrosion resistance; they investigate how properties influence selection for function, aesthetics and sustainability, and how treatments and finishes alter behaviour. Practical testing and comparative analysis are emphasised.
