Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9) · Art & design
Formal elements
Pupils develop understanding of the formal elements—line, shape, tone, texture, colour, pattern and composition—and learn to apply them purposefully to create balanced, dynamic and expressive work. They practise analysing how these elements combine to convey meaning, experiment with scale and proportion, and use annotation to evaluate decisions and refine outcomes.
